Queer Dàn Fantasy reimagines the traditional Nán Dàn, the male cross-dressing performance in Chinese opera, into a bold, contemporary queer art form called “Queer Dàn.” Created by eight queer artists of Chinese descent, the performance challenges the heteronormative and patriarchal norms embedded in traditional Nán Dàn, instead showcasing the rich and unacknowledged narratives of queer individuals today.
This performance seeks to awaken a broader recognition of Chinese queerness while expanding the definition of queerness beyond Western experiences. Through Queer Dàn Fantasy, the creators aim to dismantle white-dominated queer frameworks, highlight diverse gender and cultural expressions, and present a defiant rejection of patriarchy and white supremacy.
