The first version of How about Unkraut was developed during the APAL Residency Program Edition III from September 27 to October 3, 2021. It premiered as a lecture performance on October 3, 2021, at the RING Theater in Berlin. This version focused on the artist’s personal immigration journey, integrating family stories to highlight the adaptation and self-reconstruction process in a new cultural environment. Through storytelling and performance, it explored the intersections between personal history and social culture. The second version was presented during Documenta at KulturFenster in Kassel on August 5, 2022. This iteration, co-created with director Yu-Ching Huang, incorporated interactive art installations to deepen audience engagement and expand the exploration of cultural integration and individual struggles, symbolized by the metaphor of weeds.

How about Unkraut uses weeds as a metaphor to explore the friction and adaptation between individuals and society, as well as old and new cultures. It integrates the artist’s personal immigration experiences and family stories, reflecting on how one seeks balance and connection within diverse cultural contexts. Inspired by Richard Mabey’s book Weeds: In Defense of Nature's Most Unloved Plants, the project positions weeds as a symbol of resistance against societal norms, much like the immigrant's journey to find identity in a new culture. Combining performance, lectures, and installations, it emphasizes bodily expression as a bridge to examine dialogues and integrations across cultures, delving deeply into the survival philosophy of individuals within a social framework.
